From her fox state she can turn into a human. In her animal form she appears as a regular fox, even though her fur is white and seems to emit a slight glow. Yan is an Huli-Jing, a spirit able to change her appearance into the one of a fox or a human. Years later, Renshu passes away just before the colonized modernizing of China, while Liang and Yan are now friends. Liang was asked by his father if there was any pups, Liang lies to Renshu, allowing Yan to escape. At the end of their conversation, her mother comes out to warn her about humans until Renshu beheads her to collect the bounty. She talks with Liang for a while and stated that a human can love a Huli Jing without magic. Yan is met for the first time by Liang while he and his father, Renshu, are trying to hunt down and kill Tsiao-Jung, Yan's mother.
